The country around Soryntha looks like ordinary grazing land, and what leaves it says otherwise. Beneath the sod there is stone worth cutting and metal worth raising, and the city — substantial, raised in the first wave of expansion after the original foundations — was built to work it. Mining pays for everything else, and everything else is unusual for a mining town: a position on the south-eastern grassland that has to be held, a scholarly habit reaching well past the practicalities of ore, and a public culture the Sorythans treat as a serious matter rather than a diversion.
Sorythan allegiance runs to Soryntha itself, while rule sits with Karnosta, and Karnosta belongs to the wider bloc of Tirbasos — an arrangement that gives the city both a near master and a much broader horizon. Its people are Suvanar, and their goddess is the Ruby as the Scorchmother, aspect of growth. In a city that spends its days breaking rock, a faith of increase supplies the balance, and her priestesses, wholly female as every Ruby priesthood is, keep the seasonal rites.
