Teratria — The Beast-Yoke

It works on the wolf. It has never once worked on anyone who could be reasoned with, and the people who kept trying are the reason we know.

Teratria is the imposition of will upon living animals that carry thymara — the schema of the war-beast, the hunting pack, the mount that does not spook, and a very long list of atrocities.

Its limit is also its definition, and it is worth being exact about because a great deal of blood was spilled over the confusion. Teratria reaches animals. It does not reach sapients. Every attempt in recorded history to yoke a thinking people with it has failed — and the failures were not near misses, they were categorical.

That has never entirely stopped anyone. The Crusades against the Beasts were fought in part on the assumption that the distinction was a matter of degree, and cities like Tirbasos built whole doctrines of dominion on it. Hylessa exists because those doctrines were wrong.

• Will imposed, directly. The practitioner's intent overrides the animal's own. There is no persuasion step and no partnership; the beast simply does the thing.
• It requires thymara in the subject. The animal must be alive and must carry the inner fire that all living things carry. It is not a schema of puppetry over dead matter.
• Range and number trade against each other. A practitioner may hold one beast at great distance or a great many close at hand, and every field commander who has used it has spent their career choosing between the two.
• It is fast. Unlike training, which takes seasons, a Teratrian yoke takes moments. This is the entire military argument for it.

• It stops at sapience. No Teratrian working has ever taken hold of a person, of any people. This is not a matter of strength or skill. The schema simply does not reach there, and the doctrine that insisted otherwise cost the eastern rainforest several centuries of war.
• The beast knows. Yoked animals are aware they have been yoked. Released ones remember it, and released ones in numbers have ended more than one practitioner.
• It degrades the subject. Beasts held under the yoke for long periods do not recover fully. Their usefulness declines, their tempers do not, and the practical answer has usually been to acquire more beasts.
• It is despised. Across most of the continent the schema carries a stigma out of all proportion to its power, for reasons that anyone who has read the history of the Crusades will find entirely reasonable.
