The Cursed Blue Rose
Where the western boreal forest meets the ocean, Vesiki works a mine that runs out under the waves. Above ground there is little to see — spruce, a gravel shore, a working harbour of no great size — but the galleries below slope seaward, and every habit in the town comes from knowing what is overhead. Pumps run day and night. Timbering is doubled and inspected twice. Crews go quiet at the far face and listen. Ore comes up wet, is dried and sorted on the shore, and goes out by ship, because there is no easier road inland worth the hauling.
Vesiki belongs to the fourth wave of dwarven expansion, later than the holds inland of it, and the ground left to it was the wet kind. The dwarves here are sons like all their kind, crafted by older hands, and the town runs small and close — the same crews descend together for a working lifetime, and a man who breaks that pattern is remembered for it. Vesiki holds to Kotori, and the metal it lifts from under the ocean goes where Kotori says.
