The Cursed Blue Rose
There is metal in the hills behind Skalodar, and the whole town is arranged to move it to the water. Rainforest covers this stretch of the eastern coast, heavy and wet and green right down to the tideline, so the workings are cut into slopes that are half stone and half root, and the hauling paths are laid with split timber against the mud. What comes out is smelted and worked before it ships; a modest town raised in the newest wave of expansion cannot afford to sell raw ore when it can sell finished goods. Alongside the mining year runs a harvest year, forest food and timber taken as the seasons allow.
Skalodran life answers to Berevik, whose reach along this coast is measured in cargo rather than proclamations. The people are Suvanar, and the goddess they keep is the Ruby in her aspect of the Beaconmistress, patron of discovery — a fitting devotion in a town whose prosperity depends on somebody finding the next seam. Her priesthood, like every Ruby priesthood, is wholly female, and its rites are timed to the sailing weather.
