The Cursed Blue Rose
Ore goes almost straight from the face onto the water at Mendizur. Boreal forest meets a cold ocean here, and the workings stand near enough to the shore that a good day's output reaches the landing before dark; there is no long haul, and no need of one. The forest gives props, planking and fuel. The sea gives the only road that matters, and everything the mine produces goes out by hull. Weather governs the rest: hard wind and harder water close the coast for a stretch of every year, and the shut months go to cutting, sorting and stockpiling against the day the ships come back.
What is dug has to be owed to somebody. Mendizur's allegiance runs to Kabaso, the harbour along the same shore, which takes what the mine sends down and sets the terms on which the ships arrive. The people here belong to the fourth wave of expansion, Ashanar and plain about obligation, holding to what was agreed even when the season makes delivery hard.
