The Cursed Blue Rose
Ocean opens on one flank of Lemmalu and temperate rainforest presses in on the other, leaving a narrow wet strip of usable ground that the town has filled end to end. Its living comes off the water and out of the yards: slips and moorings along the shore, timber brought down from the forest behind, rope walks and sail lofts, crews wintering between voyages. The forest gives it hulls and the sea gives it work, and the two together are why a modest settlement raised in the fourth wave of expansion has never needed to grow larger than it is.
Its people are Ashanar of the seafaring kind, at ease with a far horizon and exacting about the covenant behind a voyage. Lemmalu's allegiance runs inland to Tamazor, the great farming city out in the grass, though the faction governing Tamazor and the towns beneath it carries Lemmalu's own name, so that a small harbour lends its word to the rule of places many times its size.
