The Cursed Blue Rose
Two edges keep Keberun at work: the mineral ground beneath the western boreal forest, and the ocean at its front. Ore comes out of the workings inland, is dressed and sorted, and goes out over the city's own water frontage, with no long overland haul and no borrowed port. The forest supplies the timber and the fuel the mines eat; the sea supplies the way out. Weather governs the rest, since the shipping season is short and everything stacked up through the cold months has to move in the open weeks.
The city dates from the fifth and most recent wave of expansion, and unlike much of what was raised alongside it, it answers to no larger neighbour. The allegiance it stands in carries its own name, and what is decided here is decided on its own account. Ashanar hands do the work, covenant-bound and horizon-minded, willing to take the long view of a hole in the ground.
