The Cursed Blue Rose
The Verdant Kinship was founded on a refusal: that fire and frost must be enemies, and that a world caught between them has no choice but to burn or freeze. Its founder, a radiant woman of the Belstern line, went south from the wars and found in the untouched Verdant Wilds a place where nature had already solved the problem she had come to think insoluble.
What she taught there became Harmonia, the Essence of Harmony — a force meant not to defeat fire or frost but to hold them in balance. The Kinship's charge has never changed since: master Harmonia, protect it, and prepare the world for a fire that prophecy says will one day try to consume it.
The Kinship's home is Verdarynia, a lush island in the far south of the world, and the Atlas charts no settlement anywhere near it — the nearest charted town lies a long ocean away. Its towering oaks are said to root in volcanic soil and frost-touched ground at once. At its centre stands the Verdant Heart, an oak whose bark carries a faint radiance and whose roots cradle both molten rock and ice.
On the southern shore stands the Bastion of Stillbloom, half grove and half fortress, and it is not ceremonial. Something comes out of the deep southern water against that shore, and has for a very long time.
The Kinship's first leader still leads it. Natyria lost her parents and her whole village to fire raised by cultists of the Ancient Devil, and came out of it without hatred — which is precisely why she was chosen. Made the conduit of Harmonia at its creation, she has lived on far past any natural span, not for her own sake but to see one duty through.
It was Natyria who carried a certain infant out of the burning of Skaitos, and Natyria who raised him.
On the continent the Kinship holds only two charted places: Hylessa in the eastern rainforest, the one settlement in all the Atlas recorded as keeping the Verdancy, and Kolmos out among the eastern isles.
The Infernate despises the Kinship for adulterating what it calls pure fire. The Glacial Dominion respects its balance and distrusts its use of flame. The Emberguard admires its philosophy and thinks it hopelessly idealistic.
