Numina — The Vessel-Craft

The Ruby gave power to blood. The Hammer gave it to steel.

Numina is the schema of artifice — the patient, brilliant gift of the Hammer, Elder of unity, shared burden, and the craft of making. A master artificer pours their own thymara, and sometimes whole patterns of finished magical work, into a crafted object — a numinar — until the wonder lives in the thing itself. Thereafter, whoever holds the object holds the magic: expertise made portable, genius that outlives the hand that forged it.

It is the foundation of dwarven artifice, the source of the relics, engines, and enchanted arms for which the dwarves of the northwest are famed across all Kworgale.

• The wonder lives in the object. Charge — and, in the finest works, structured magical function — is externalized into the numinar's very matrix. The object does not merely store the spell; in a sense, it is the spell.
• The object is the key. To wield a numinar, one need only possess it. No bloodline, no oath, no rite — the thing works in any hand that holds it.
• Portable and unbounded. A numinar carries its power wherever it goes. Distance from its maker means nothing; possession does all the work.
• Renewable. Charge can be poured in at the forging and, in many cases, replenished after — a well-made numinar can serve for centuries.

The wonder lives in the object — and answers any hand that holds it.

• Insecure by nature. What works in any hand works in the wrong hand. A numinar lost is a numinar surrendered; an enemy who takes it wields it as easily as its maker.
• The deepest craft is a dwarven secret. True numinara, in the strict sense, are bound up with the crystalline cast of the dwarven mind. Other races may use them freely — but few can truly make them.
• A finite well. The magic is only as deep as the charge laid into it. Spent and un-replenished, even the mightiest numinar falls silent — no more than fine metalwork.
• It cannot grow. A numinar does what it was made to do, and nothing more. It has no will, no judgement, no capacity to learn; its genius is forever the genius of the day it was forged.
