Memordia — The Kept Memory

Among the elves, death is not the end of counsel. It is the beginning of it.

A keeper of the Glacial Dominion wakes the wisdom sleeping in the crystal.

Memordia is the schema of remembrance — the solemn art of the Warden, Elder of preservation, memory, and the deep laws of sorcery. As an elf nears the end of a long life, they may commit their consciousness — their wisdom, their craft, their very self — into a crystal vessel, a plinth. There the mind endures, dreaming in the half-world of the Veil, and the living may wake it to ask counsel, draw upon its power, or simply remember.

The keeping of these crystal dead is the inheritance of the elves of the Glacial Dominion, and its present steward is Glacya, the Frost Queen, who holds the Warden's old authority over the Kept Memory.

• The dead are anchored in crystal. A dying mind is committed into a material plinth, preserved whole. Most of its existence is spent dreaming Veilside; it surfaces when called, and its strength seems tied to that long, renewing sleep.
• The living draw upon the kept. A plinth offers its power, its enchantment, and its counsel — generations of accumulated wisdom available to any who know how to ask.
• Access spreads by knowing. There is no key to carry. To wake a plinth one must learn its activation — and that knowledge, once taught, can be taught again.
• Voluntary in the giving. No mind is committed against its will; the elf chooses to become a Kept Memory, trading the silence of death for a long service to those who remain.

The dead are anchored in crystal; the living come to them for counsel.

• Rooted in place. A plinth cannot travel. Its gifts are site-bound, anchored to the crystal — the wisdom of the dead must be visited; it will not come to you.
• Known is open. Because access spreads by learning rather than by a guarded token, it cannot be truly locked. Anyone who learns the waking-pattern can rouse the dead — and that knowledge, once loose, cannot be recalled.
• No refusal, once given. A committed consciousness cannot decline the summons. Having chosen service, the Kept Memory must answer when it is called, again and again.
• A long twilight, not a life. The kept do not truly live. They dream, and wake, and counsel, and return to dreaming — a preservation of memory, not a defeat of death.
